BUSINESSSep 14Why streamers embracing weekly releases even more?Streaming platforms are so desperate for engagement, but still release nearly 40% of their shows under the binge model. For streaming services, as with all other businesses, the bottom line is dollars and cents. Streamers have to show sustained profitability these days, and one of the most reliable ways to ensure subscribers continue paying their monthly fee is to ensure they engage with a given platform regularly. The way streamers choose to release new shows can have a major impact on how they generate engagement; binge releases usually draw a big audience initially, but that audience can fade quickly. Weekly episode drops, on the other hand, can create more sustained engagement, even if initial numbers aren’t as eye-popping. So, if streamers are so invested in building more sustainable engagement, they must all be turning toward the weekly release, right? New data from Luminate shows that, while streaming services are using the weekly release model a majority of the time, binge releases are still prominent across major services — not just Netflix . The data points to how carefully streamers consider each show’s engagement potential ahead of its debut. Sign Up $8.99+ / month netflix.com The data from Luminate shows that in the first half of 2026, 61% of TV releases across Apple TV , Disney+ , HBO Max , Hulu , Paramount+ , Peacock , and Prime Video were of the weekly variety. But 38% of releases from these streamers are still binge episode drops, showing it’s not just Netflix that continues to use the binge release method that it pioneered. Click chart to expand. Batch releases — where multiple episodes are released at a time — have failed to catch on with major streamers, as only 1% of all releases in the first half of 2026 used this pattern. But the overall data shows that, while weekly releases are slowly expanding their adoption, binge releases are still an important part of streamers’ overall strategy. Different release tempos can create different engagement trends. Binge releases tend to get most of their viewers right away, but viewership decays quickly. However, the onslaught of coverage and conversation all at once can turn a release into an event. Conversely, weekly releases can bring audiences back to a platform to watch new episodes on a regular basis, and the consistent buzz week after week can allow a show to gain momentum as it builds an audience. So, why aren’t streamers abandoning the binge release model if they’re so desperate for engagement? For now, many are trying other ways to keep people on their platforms. Reports indicate that Netflix has considered adding live channels and other methods in order to turn around its minor engagement troubles, and it’s the service that uses the binge release model more than any other. The short answer is that not every show is built for the weekly release model. While some titles, like Peacock realtiy show “ Love Island USA ,” are tailor-made to build a season-long narrative week over week, other shows — particularly scripted titles, like Hulu ’s “ The Bear ” — are built to be consumed quickly. The condensed episode count of many scripted streaming titles means that writers have to pack a ton of story into each episode, and all those quick-hitting twists and turns make it harder on viewers to watch each episode. Streamers are still doing the work to identify which titles are best suited to each release model because maximizing engagement is the most important thing. If a binge release will lead to the highest overall engagement for a title, so be it. If it’s a show that can keep bringing viewers back to a platform week after week, great, but it’s always a gamble. Streamers that give titles a weekly release, then see them flop may opt to cancel that show instead of giving it another chance with a different release pattern. The data from Luminate reveals that streamers are still using binge releases in large numbers. The tactic is a key part of each streamers’ engagement strategy, even if releasing all episodes at once instead of weekly seems counterintuitive to building sustainable engagement.
