BUSINESSJul 10Why the Philippines is losing out in Southeast Asia’s investment boomThe Philippines still lags behind its neighbours in attracting foreign direct investments (FDI) after its inflows remained stagnant in 2025, even as a financing influx swept the region. This has cast the spotlight on a corruption scandal that has roiled the country and dented investor confidence to some extent, on top of long-standing systemic issues, analysts say. Manila ranked sixth in Southeast Asia after capturing just US$9 billion of the US$244 billion capital boom last year, according to...South China Morning Post
MILITARYJul 10Philippines looks to space for bird’s-eye view of South China Sea threatsThe Philippines is preparing to create a military space centre by 2028, a move that could help Manila strengthen surveillance, communications and command across its archipelago and in contested areas of the South China Sea. But analysts said the ambition would be constrained by the technical, financial and manpower hurdles of turning space assets into military capability. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jnr said on Tuesday the initiative – which would enhance...South China Morning Post
BUSINESSJul 9Philippines got an economic upgrade, yet many Filipinos feel it’s no ‘big deal’The World Bank recently upgraded the Philippines to an upper-middle-income country, but that classification makes little difference to many Filipinos grappling with rising cost of living, debt and stagnant wages. Manila resident Ann Michelle Federez-Abato, 35, said her entire salary goes towards her parents’ mortgage, while she and her two-year-old daughter subsist on a monthly remittance of 20,000 pesos (US$324) from her husband, who works abroad as a production officer at a factory. POLITICSJul 6Philippines’ impeachment showdown: why removing VP Sara could be uphill battlePhilippine Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio did not attend the opening of her impeachment trial on Monday, leaving her lawyers to fight charges that, if upheld, could remove her from office, permanently bar her from politics and reshape the 2028 presidential race. Legal experts told This Week in Asia they expected Duterte-Carpio to be difficult, though not impossible, to convict despite the gravity of the charges because prosecutors would need at least 16 senators – two-thirds of the chamber –...South China Morning Post

BUSINESSJul 6Philippines’ record capital wage rise leaves workers hungry for moreIn the Philippine capital, 85 pesos (US$1.40) is barely enough to buy a meal for one, let alone a family of five. Yet that modest sum, roughly the price of 1½kg of premium imported rice, is the largest single wage increase ever approved for Metro Manila’s minimum-wage earners. The government called it “historic”. Labour groups called it an insult. The increase, to be rolled out in two stages, was confirmed by the Department of Labour and Employment on Tuesday. BUSINESSJul 3US, European business groups hail Philippines’ new World Bank statusForeign business groups welcomed the Philippines’ leap to upper-middle-income status as a positive signal of the country’s growing position as a competitive investment destination. In a statement, the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) said the World Bank’s reclassification of the Philippines is an important milestone in the country’s pursuit of economic progress. “This achievement sends a positive signal to global investors at a time when companies are reassessing supply chains, expanding regional operations, and looking for new growth markets across the Indo-Pacific,” AmCham said. The Philippines moved up from lower-middle-income to upper-middle-income-country (UMIC) status after its gross national income (GNI) per capita reached a record $4,850, according to the World Bank. AmCham said the Philippines’ new status will further strengthen its appeal to American companies looking to invest in Southeast Asia. The group noted that the country is already attractive due to its young and skilled workforce, strong English proficiency, and longstanding economic ties with the US. “These advantages, combined with a growing consumer market, position the Philippines to attract more investments in advanced manufacturing, digital services, infrastructure, healthcare, and other high-value sectors,” it said. To ensure that this momentum carries into the coming years, AmCham said the country must focus on instituting reforms aimed at sustaining growth and enhancing competitiveness. Among the top priorities, according to the group, is advancing policies that encourage innovation and investment to position the Philippines to attract more high-value investments and create better jobs. This also includes accelerating infrastructure development, improving digital connectivity, ensuring affordable and reliable energy, streamlining government processes, and strengthening public-private partnerships, AmCham said. “Continued public-private sector collaboration will be essential to ensuring that this milestone translates into broader economic opportunities and long-term prosperity,” the group added. The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) said in a separate statement that the country’s UMIC status comes at a pivotal time for economic relations between the European Union (EU) and the Philippines, especially as both sides look to complete negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA). “As the Philippines advances in its development path, the timely conclusion of an ambitious, balanced, and commercially meaningful EU-Philippines FTA becomes even more important,” said ECCP President Diana Edralin. She said the trade pact will build on the Philippines' economic gains by unlocking new opportunities in trade and investment and establishing a more permanent and reciprocal framework for market access to the EU.
