BUSINESS3d agoDubai-it: ‘Even in a desert, find water’: How Mahesh Shahdadpuri built TASC Group into a success storyDubai: “Even in the middle of a desert, if you needed water, you had to find a way to get it.” For most people, it might sound like a metaphor. For Mahesh Shahdadpuri, it became a way of life. The lesson came from his father when he was growing up, and decades later it still shapes the way he thinks about business, failure and opportunity. It is also the mindset that helped him bounce back from a failed first venture, navigate some of the toughest moments of his career and ultimately build TASC Group into one of the region’s leading workforce solutions companies. “Entrepreneurship, I’ve realised, is less about having the right answers and more about refusing to stop looking for them,” Shahdadpuri says. His story begins far from Dubai. Born into a Sindhi family in Delhi, Shahdadpuri spent much of his childhood moving from one country to another as his father served in the Indian Foreign Service. Every few years brought a new city, a new school and a new group of friends. “At the time, it wasn’t always easy,” he recalls. “Every few years, I had to leave friends behind and begin again. But looking back, it was one of life’s greatest gifts.” Constantly adapting to new environments taught him how to connect with people from different backgrounds and feel comfortable in unfamiliar situations. Those skills would later prove invaluable in business. His parents left a lasting influence on him in different ways. His father encouraged curiosity, ambition and independent thinking, while his mother reminded him to stay grounded and humble. Together, they instilled three values that still guide him today: be authentic, help people whenever you can and never stop aspiring to do something meaningful. Growing up in a Sindhi community that had rebuilt itself after displacement also left a deep impression. “Circumstances may change,” he says, “but your ability to move forward should not.” At home, resilience was not taught through speeches. It was taught through action. If something broke, whether it was the water supply or a telephone connection, young Mahesh was expected to figure out a solution himself. That mindset stayed with him. Learning the hard way Looking back now, Shahdadpuri is remarkably open about failure. Before TASC, there was another entrepreneurial venture. It did not succeed. “That venture failed. I lost thousands of dollars, years of effort and much of my confidence,” he says. For a time, it felt devastating. But with hindsight, he sees it differently. “Sometimes life isn’t holding you back,” he reflects. “It’s preparing you for something you’re not yet ready to build.” The years that followed were spent rebuilding. He worked across different businesses, learnt the fundamentals of sales and operations, and developed the financial discipline that would later become critical to running a successful company. “I started in modest jobs, made cold calls from a desk in a hallway and faced my share of rejection,” he says. None of it felt glamorous at the time. Yet those experiences became the foundation for everything that followed. Why Dubai felt different His journey to Dubai began almost by accident. Years ago, his father missed a connecting flight while travelling to the UK. Instead of waiting at the airport, he spent a few days exploring Dubai. “He was immediately impressed by its efficiency, openness and possibilities,” Shahdadpuri recalls. The experience sparked his own curiosity. He began visiting Dubai during his college years and was captivated by the city’s energy. “It was smaller and quieter then,” he says. “But there was something remarkable about it.” What stood out most was its attitude towards ambition. “Dubai didn’t ask where you came from or how established you were,” he says. “It offered you an opportunity to build something.” Unlike many places where ambition can be viewed with scepticism, he felt Dubai actively encouraged people to dream bigger. “That’s what I admire most about the city. Ambition isn’t treated as an unrealistic dream. It’s encouraged.” It is the idea behind a phrase he often uses: “Dubai-it”. For Shahdadpuri, it means refusing to be limited by conventional thinking and finding a way to turn bold ideas into reality. Building TASC, one client at a time When he launched TASC, there was no grand blueprint. He started with a few thousand dollars, strong financial discipline and a belief that businesses needed better ways to access and manage talent. “One thing entrepreneurship has taught me is that you don’t need to see the entire staircase before taking the first step,” he says. “You need conviction, discipline and the willingness to learn and pivot along the way.” The timing was far from ideal. Shortly after TASC was launched, the global financial crisis hit. Like many founders in the early stages of a business, Shahdadpuri found himself doing everything. “I was involved in everything, from meeting clients and preparing proposals to managing operations,” he says. But the biggest challenge was not funding or competition. It was trust. “Why should someone choose a company they had never heard of?” he asks. The answer, he realised, was personal credibility. “Before people trust your business, they need to trust you. So I focused on showing up, keeping my word and delivering on every commitment.” Slowly, the company began winning clients. More than two decades later, one memory still stands out. “I still remember the joy of winning our first few clients,” he says. “No matter how large a business becomes, nothing quite compares to the first time someone believes in you.” The founder’s biggest challenge As TASC grew, Shahdadpuri discovered that scaling a company requires a different set of skills from starting one. The challenge was learning to let go. “I’ve always asked myself a simple question: ‘How can I make myself redundant?’” he says with a smile. It may sound like an unusual ambition for a founder, but he believes successful organisations should never depend on a single individual. “Businesses grow when leaders stop trying to be indispensable and start making others capable of achieving more than they could alone.” Today, he sees leadership less as control and more as empowerment. A student for life Despite building a successful company, Shahdadpuri insists he has never felt that he has “arrived”. Success, he says, is not a destination. “I believe we’re entering a period where the ability to learn will become more valuable than what we already know.” That belief is why he regularly spends time with younger professionals, listening to their perspectives on technology, entrepreneurship and the future of work. “The future will belong not necessarily to those who know the most, but to those willing to keep learning.” The legacy that matters When asked what advice he would give his younger self, Shahdadpuri pauses before answering. “Dream big, trust the process and, most importantly, enjoy the journey.” It is a philosophy shaped by setbacks, risks and second chances. And when he thinks about the legacy he wants to leave behind, he does not talk about revenue, valuations or corporate milestones. Instead, he talks about people. “Some of my proudest moments have come from watching people grow, achieve things they once thought impossible and create better lives for their families,” he says. Because in the end, he believes success is measured not by what you build for yourself, but by what you help others achieve. “At the end of the day, I don’t think people remember how successful you were,” he says. “They remember the difference you made in their lives. And if I can leave behind something meaningful in that regard, I would consider it a life well lived.”emirates247 · united arab emirates
